Me and my Guitar

While dealing with my spinal injury there were many different things that I realized and was told by doctors that I would not be able to do any more. Things such as skating, rock climbing, backpacking through mountains, racing sailboats, and martial arts were things that I somehow had to learn to let go. While I loved doing these and many other things I have had to accept that these things are gone forever. Instead of focusing on what I have lost I have been trying to focus on new things that I can now try in place of what I have lost. While this is easier said than done it is something that has to be done. One of the most important things that I did was pick music back up. While I played music all through school I let it go after graduating high school. One thing that I never had the time to do while playing music in school was pick up playing string instruments such as the guitar. Some months after being injured I was bored out of my mind and obviously somewhat depressed so I decided to get a guitar, take lessons, and start playing. While I admit that I am not the best guitar player in the world I have to admit that it has helped to fill some of the new gaps in my life and has led me to learning other instruments. If anyone needs to learn a hobby that will follow them throughout life the guitar is one that I would recommend to everyone from the youngest child to the adult. Music is definitely a great thing for anyone with a disability to learn and I would encourage everyone with a disability that is able to try it to do so.
